East: Parks, Beaches, Scuba Diving
Wide open Wilderness Adventures await, no matter where you turn from your Klehkoot Marina Vistas home.
Turn East from your Klehkoot Marina Vistas home and discover the nearby community of Port Alberni. A highlight is the McLean Mill National Historic Site, Canada's only working steam-operated sawmill. Step back in time to the recreated mill camp, with more than 30 original buildings. From June to September, actors play the roles of typical mill residents. The best way to reach the sawmill is via the Alberni Valley Railway. See old train trestles, farms, and forests as you journey on board the No. Seven Locie, a 1929 Baldwin logging steam train, that departs from the historic 1912 station in Port Alberni five days a week from mid-June through September.
Continue east to discover a chain of provincial parks, wilderness jewels cast in your path, ready for easy exploration. At Cathedral Grove, you'll find walkways and interpretative stations admidst towering old growth trees and equally impressive deadfalls, giving you a glimpse of how the west coast appeared to the first European settlers.
Further east you'll find two enchanting stops: Englishman River Falls Provincial Park is a breathtakingly beautiful cascade of falls and deep aquamarine pools bordered by trails with nearby campsites while Little Qualicum River Falls combine the drama of its tumbling waters with the potential for camping, fishing, and swimming on the south shore of Cameron Lake.
Continue east to a sweep of sand and sea worthy of South Sea paradise, as you pause at Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park, which offers oceanside camping next to wide expanses of sand, tidal pools to explore, swimming, bird-watching and more. Look around: additional beaches and islands await discovery.
Head a short distance south to one of the best man-made reefs for cold-water scuba diving, found in Nanaimo Harbour. Nanaimo also offers shopping, restaurants, theatres and more.
