SouthTurn south to head into the most populated area of the island and the provincial capital, Victoria, on the island's southern tip. But before you reach Victoria, there is plenty to discover.

Experience wild adventure at Wild Play just south of Nanaimo. Bungy jumping into the Nanaimo River, an aerial playground in the trees, and a giant swing are among the attractions.

Further south and inland is Lake Cowichan, the island's second largest lake. Here you'll find hiking and cycling, camping, fishing, swimming, boating, canoeing and more. Further south and east is Nitinat Lake, a world-class destination for windsurfers, and the hushed, old-growth forest trails of Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park.

Just past the quaint seaside town of Ladysmith - a must-see for its annual Christmas lights display - are the renowned murals of Chemainus, a town which painted itself into new life as a visitor attraction. For an elegant evening celebration, experience the Chemanius Theatre, complete with dinner buffet.

Just before you reach Duncan, you can turn off at Crofton and take a ferry to Salt Spring Island, an artistic community famous for its market, wineries and celebrity residents. In Duncan, you'll want to stop at the Quw'utsun' Cultural and Conference centre to experience Cowichan First Nations culture.

A short distance south you can stop in Cobble Hill to hike a section of the Trans Canada Trail, including the restored 66-Mile and Holt Creek train trestles, which give you spectacular views far above the Cowichan River.

For wine lovers, the region boasts many successful small wineries, which offer tours and tastings.

At the foot of the island, just before the capital city of Victoria, you'll find Goldstream Provincial Park, another haven of west coast rain forest hiking trails which also boasts a salmon spawning stream, where you can view the salmon run from September to December.
